Volatility index (VIX)

Where I work, we regularly tell readers how to minimize their risk amid and even profit from market volatility. Among the advice I see:

  • Think longer-term -- Don't get too uptight about what the market does from day to day. As long as you're gaining over all, you're cool.
  • Embrace the volatility -- Depending on your risk tolerance, it could be an excellent buying opportunity.
  • Diversify your investments -- When things are all wacky and uncertain, it's best to play the field with a mix of stocks and bonds across several sectors.
  • Invest at regular intervals

And, from here:

"Most average investors, unfortunately, make the worst possible timing decisions because of their fear or pride. These feelings can dim the vision and distort the thinking of even seasoned investors, fooling them into concluding that their recent experience represents an inevitable trend."
