Warning: The following story is extremely upsetting.
A shelter worker recently rescued a dog from a gas chamber in Liberty County, Georgia.
I found a video interview of the shelter worker, Deborah Palpal-Latoc, on CNN:
"The dog above it... its body fluids were dripping over it. She was foaming at the mouth and scared. We pulled her out of the chamber."
I found a few more stories about animals surviving gas chambers, including this one, which includes additional information on pet euthanasia in the U.S.
At the time the National Geographic story was published last year, 13 states required shelters to kill animals via lethal injection. Shelters in many other states, including Texas, routinely use carbon monoxide chambers to destroy animals.
The good news is the Liberty County shelter has said it will stop using gas chambers and switch to lethal injection. The better news would be if gas chambers were banned nationwide.
